Event Description:
MORRISTOWN SHADE TREE COMMISSION ANNOUNCES ANNUAL ARBOR DAY EVENT
The Morristown Shade Tree Commission is excited to announce its 11th annual Arbor Day event on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, at 4 p.m. in celebration of the Burnham Park Association at Burnham Park.
This year’s Arbor Day will see four Pin Oaks planted along the basketball court of Burnham Park. The Oak tree is one of the most important shade trees in the Northeast because it hosts over 500 species of insects that feed our song bird population.
It takes a mother Chickadee 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to feed a clutch of eggs (6-8) and the Oak tree is responsible for a good number of those caterpillars.
The Morristown Shade Tree Commission (STC), created in 2013, is responsible for the town’s public trees and shrubs. The STC continues to plant trees in Morristown’s right of way while also working in the forested areas of Morristown’s local parks.
In the parks they work to de-vine and save trees, remove and replace invasive shrubs, remediate and reforest. To date, the Morristown STC has brought in $150,000 in grant money for tree plantings.
The Burnham Park Association is a nonprofit, grassroots all-volunteer organization founded in 1948 to serve as stewards of Burnham Park, Jones Woods, the Green Strip and surrounding areas.
The BPA is dedicated to preserving, protecting environmentally sensitive lands, viewsheds, critical natural resources and historic sites. It collaborates with other organizations on various projects and events, and works to educate area citizens, promoting community engagement with the goal of preserving a beautiful area for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations.
The Morristown Shade Tree Commission meets the third Tuesday of the month in Room 201 in Town Hall at 7:00p.m. The public is welcome.
