Historic Speedwell consists of 7 1/2 acres preserving the remaining part of the Homestead Estate of Stephen Vail, proprietor of the Speedwell Iron Works from the early to mid 1800's. The site's most prominent place in history comes from being the birthplace of the telegraph. It was here that Alfred Vail worked with Samuel F. B. Morse to develop and perfect the apparatus. The site is open to the public from May-October and to celebrate the holidays in early December.
